Resume Digestive pathology is one of the causes of morbidity and mortality in the most common rabbit breeding. In Benin, no study has yet been carried out on Escherichia coli involved in intestinal diseases. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli and the overall proportion of E. coli in rabbits reared in Abomey-Calavi, in South Benin. To this end, we conducted a bacteriological study from 74 rabbits (39 weaned) including 33 males and 41 females. After the cadavers autopsy, samples were taken on the intestines and caeca with inflammatory lesions. Bacteriological analyzes from these samples have revealed the presence of enteropathogenic E. coli carrying the eaeA gene in rabbit farms in Abomey-Calavi, with a frequency of 10.8%. Out of all the intestines and caeca treaties, the overall frequency of E. coli (enteropathogenic or not) is estimated at 56.9%. No significant changes were observed depending on either sex or age of rabbits. The antibiotic sensitivity test showed that all isolates were sensitive to Gentamicin and Enroflaxine. The presence of E. coli carrying the eaeA gene in rabbits reared in the district of Abomey-Calavi is indicative of the high risk of morbidity and mortality related to infectious intestinal diseases in rabbit farms.
